About the European Rural Mobility Network (ERMN)

The European Rural Mobility Network (ERMN) exists to make mobility in rural areas more accessible, sustainable, and fair for all. By promoting greener transport as a driver of development, cohesion, and opportunity, ERMN connects municipalities, regions, practitioners, and communities across Europe. Its mission is simple: to empower rural areas with solutions that connect people, places, and ideas.

ERMN acts as a hub for knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and advocacy. It organises webinars, conferences, and training sessions, publishes policy recommendations and case studies, and creates opportunities for collaboration between local authorities, associations, service providers, and researchers. These activities help build trust, strengthen expertise, and amplify the voice of rural communities at the European level.

The network was created as the legacy of the SMARTA and SMARTA-NET projects (2018–2024), which developed best practices, surveys, and guidance on rural mobility across 15 EU Member States. Building on this experience, ERMN was formally established in 2025 as an independent association, ensuring that rural mobility has a strong and lasting voice in Europe.
